LWR

Light Water Reactor

Light Water Reactor (LWR) uses ordinary water as moderator and coolant; dominant type comprising PWRs (70%) and BWRs (20%) of global fleet.

LWRs enrich uranium to 3-5% U-235, operate at 15 MPa (PWR) or saturated steam (BWR), with ~33% thermal efficiency. Over 400 units supply 85% of nuclear power, rated 600-1600 MWe. PWRs separate steam generators; BWRs boil in-vessel. Gen II designs dominate, with III/III+ upgrades.

Why it matters now

LWRs anchor 2025 restarts and life extensions for data center demand. SMRs like BWRX-300 evolve LWR tech for faster licensing via NRC familiarity.
